Healing benefits of the sun

1. Sunlight Helps Your Body Make Vitamin D Naturally

We weren’t designed to get all our vitamin D from pills. When UVB rays from the sun hit your skin, they trigger a reaction that produces vitamin D3, which your body then activates for use in immune support, bone strength, hormone balance, and so much more.

  • Studies show that vitamin D deficiency is linked to autoimmune diseases, depression, chronic fatigue, and even cancer.

  • Just 10–30 minutes of direct sunlight (depending on your skin tone) on your face, arms, or legs can help you meet your daily needs.

This is why you feel better when you’re outside. It’s not in your head, it’s actually in your cells.

2. Sunlight Improves Mood, Mental Clarity & Sleep

Your body’s internal clock is called the circadian rhythm and it is guided by light. Morning sunlight helps signal to your brain that it’s time to be awake, alert, and focused by boosting serotonin (your “happy” hormone).

Later, that serotonin is converted to melatonin, your natural sleep hormone.

This is why getting sunlight in the morning (especially before 10am) can:

  • Help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer
  • Improve focus and memory (great for kids, busy mamas, and business professionals)
  • Reduce anxiety and feelings of depression

3. Sunlight Reduces Inflammation and Strengthens Immunity

Sunlight doesn’t just boost vitamin D, it also stimulates nitric oxide release in the skin, which helps reduce blood pressure and inflammation throughout the body.

This matters because chronic inflammation is at the root of many modern diseases; heart disease, autoimmune conditions, even hormone imbalance.

Regular sun exposure (in healthy doses) has been shown to:

  • Support immune regulation
  • Lower inflammatory cytokines
  • Reduce symptoms of autoimmune conditions like MS, lupus, and IBD

4. Sunlight Supports Heart Health and Metabolic Function

Sunlight doesn’t just help your bones and mood, it’s linked to lower blood pressure, better cardiovascular health, and improved insulin sensitivity.

In other words, it helps protect against things like diabetes, stroke, and high blood pressure.

One fascinating study even showed that people who get more sun exposure have lower all-cause mortality rates, meaning they live longer!

5. Sunlight Can Help Protect Against Cancer (Yes, Really)

You’ve probably heard that the sun causes skin cancer but what most people don’t know is that adequate sun exposure is linked to a lower risk of several other types of cancer, including:

  • Breast cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma

Vitamin D plays a key role in cell growth regulation and immune defense, both of which help protect the body from cancer.

How to Get the Benefits Safely

Sunlight is a tool and like all good tools, it must be used with wisdom.

My Safe Sun Routine:

  • Sunrise: I go outside with no sunglasses, soak in the light, and reset my hormones.
  • Mid-morning to early afternoon: I aim for 10–20 minutes of direct sun on my arms and legs. Gradual sun exposure builds up your ability to sit outside for longer. SO DOES THE FOOD YOU EAT (avoiding sugar, seed oils, etc)
  • Late afternoon walks: Bonus round! And my pup loves it.

I skip sunscreen during my short, intentional sun sessions and always avoid burning. If I’ll be out longer, I opt for mineral-based SPF (like zinc oxide) or protective clothing.
